Food Stamps….Not What You Think.

Process- An action or steps taken to achieve a particular end.

We all have goals that we would like to achieve in life, maybe going back to school to finish a degree, starting a new business, or maybe purchasing a new home. All of these accomplishments will come with a hefty price; PROCESS! I can remember the day I decided to open an art studio for children. I was so excited about the idea of owning my own business, until I learned of all the particulars it took to pass the building. It was absolutely grueling. I could not believe all the tedious details relating to building and fire codes. All I wanted to do was set up shop, and share something I loved to do with kids.

And so it is with many in our communities. I was speaking with a semi homeless woman the other day; who talked with me about her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. She was born here in the states, but her family had moved here from Africa. She had a degree in English, and spoke eloquently about her experiences of her job search here in Georgia. She said she had been seeking employment for over two years, and had been unsuccessful. When I heard of her credentials, I could not help but think her story to sound discriminatory, but I said nothing. I just continued to listen. She told me of how she had slept in her car two months, and she did get government assistance (FOOD STAMPS), but  she also spoke of  how she really just wanted to get a job, and get her life on track. When she was done speaking, I prayed with her and we exchanged information.  God will put people in our path for reasons we don’t even understand.

That afternoon I remembered an after school coordinator who had asked me if I knew of someone who needed a job. I immediately went to her to asked if she still needed people  for her program. Her reply was yes! So I told her about the woman that God sent to me, and she took her information, called her up, and now the woman is working. It was a small beginning, but do not despise them; most times they lead to great things. What am I saying,  baby steps for some people can be colossal. Keep an open mind, and an open heart. Many people don’t want the two dollars you pay in taxes per pay period. They just want HELP, and a new beginning….you could be that beginning.

I am so grateful that God opened a door for that young lady, and she was too. She called me and left a message telling me she had gotten the JOB! After all…. charity is the most important gift. It is not always monetary, and sometimes comes in the form of helping someone find their way. To God Be The Glory.
